US President Donald Trump interrupted Washington's discussions on Monday with European leaders to call Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Bild told Reuters and The Guardian.

The information was later confirmed by a European diplomat for Reuters.

Trump met Washington on Monday with Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski, accompanied by the Chancellor of Germany, the premiers of Great Britain, France, Italy and Finland, the head of the European Commission and the NATO Secretary General.

The White House leader initially announced that the call was to take place after consultations with European leaders.

A European diplomat told Reuters that the interruption of the meeting by Donald Trump to call Vladimir Putin, followed by resuming discussions with European leaders and Volodimir Zelenski, is regarded as a positive step towards a peace agreement, not as a negative signal.

He added that Europeans have the impression that Trump often adopts the position of the last person he spoke to, which is why their presence still at the White House gives them the chance to have the “last word” after the phone call with Putin.
