The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the President of Ukraine Volodimir Zelenski met in Brussels, on which the head of which announced that the European Union will apply another package of sanctions on Russia. At the same time, von der Leyen excluded the acceptance of a limitation of the Ukrainian army.

“There can be no limitations imposed on Ukrainian armed forces: either regarding cooperation with third countries or assistance from them. Without limitations on Ukrainian armed forces (…) Ukraine must become a steel hedgehog, undigested for potential invaders,” Von Der Leyen said at the common press conference.

At the same time, the president said that the decisions regarding the borders of Ukraine should only be taken with the consent and in the presence of Ukraine. “The borders cannot be changed with force,” added von der Leyen.

The European official also announced that he is working on the European Commission at a new sanctions package against Russia, the one with the number 19, which will be adopted in early September.

The boss said that a Putin-Zenski-TRUMP trilateral meeting is needed to take place as soon as possible. “Ukraine can choose its own destiny, but it can count on Europe,” concluded Ursula von der Leyen.

Zelenski: “New sanctions are needed”

For his part, Volodimir Zelenski said that a peace agreement cannot be reached, without a prior armistice, to have as a landmark the current lines of the front. Thus, Zelenski again rejects the idea of withdrawing the Ukrainian herds from Donets, as a condition for freezing the front lines, a project supported by Moscow. In reply, Zelenski claimed that Russia did not achieve major successes in Donetk.

“We need real negotiations, which means we can start where the front line is now,” Zelenski said, adding that European leaders support this idea.

And the Ukrainian president also emphasized the need for the trilateral to take place as soon as possible. “Russia has not given any sign that this trilateral will take place, which is why new sanctions are needed,” said Zenski, who has greeted the EU intention to adopt a new package of sanctions against Russia.

At the same time, Zelenski said that a possible peace agreement should explicitly mention the right of Ukraine to access in the European Union.

“We consider access to the EU as part of security guarantees. There can be no separation between Moldova and Ukraine, that would automatically mean that Europe is divided into Ukraine,” Zelenski said. He thus rejects the speculations related to a possible decoupling of Kiev Chisinau in terms of the European path, as Moldova would be more advanced in this way.

After the joint press conference, Zelenski and Von Der Leyen went together to the video conferencing of the countries in the will.
