On Friday, the government of Portugal Prime Minister Luis Montenegro has launched a European population protection mechanism on Friday in connection with forest and meadows fires raging in this country for over two weeks.

According to the government, Portugal no longer has enough means to cope with fire, which is particularly strong in the northern and central part of the country.
The head of the Portuguese civil defense, commander Mario Silvestre, announced that on the basis of the announced mechanism, the Portuguese authorities asked the EU to support her four canadair firefighting aircraft.
He specified that the request to the EU authorities is a consequence of a shortage in Portugal aircraft and helicopters for extinguishing fires, as well as the inability to continue renting from Morocco of two firefighting aircraft.
On Friday, the biggest fires occur in the municipalities of Satao, Arganil, Trancoso and Lous, where a total of over 2,500 firefighters fight with the element.
