At the beginning of August, the president of the Superior Council of Magistracy, Elena Costache, declared that a pension of about 11,000 lei seems “little”. HotNews.ro has asked the National House of Public Pensions (CNPP) the official data to see how many Romanians live with such an “insufficient” pension.

The official data show, however, that such a pension is a privilege for very few. According to the National House of Public Pensions (CNPP), only 16,724 pensioners, ie 0.35% of the total, receive over 11,000 lei monthly.

The answer shows that 16,724 people, ie 0.35% of the total pensioners, benefits from a pension exceeding 11,000 lei.

In addition, almost 3 million pensioners, ie 65% of the total, have a pension of less than 3,000 lei.

In total, in Romania there are 4.69 million pensioners, and the average pension is about 2,700 lei.

Here is the distribution of pension levels in Romania, according to CNPP:

The Pension House specifies that the information does not include the unintegrated systems of the public pension system: the sectoral pension house of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, of the Ministry of National Defense, respectively of the Romanian Intelligence Service, its own social insurance systems recognized by law and the pension system of lawyers.

The smallest average pensions are in Botosani, according to INS

We have a large number of pensioners in relation to the number of employees, and this is because participation in the labor is reduced in Romania. The ratio between the average number of state and employees social insurance pensioners was 8 to 10 in the first quarter of the year, according to INS. This report presents significant variations in territorial profile, from 4 pensioners to 10 employees in Bucharest and Ilfov county, to 15 pensioners to 10 employees in Teleorman county, respectively to 13 pensioners in 10 employees in Vaslui county.

The biggest average pensions are in the capital

Moreover, if we gathered all the pensioners under the age of 65 we could populate the largest county in the country – there are over 770,000 people.

The head of the SCM: “Let's not fall into this sin of comparisons that have no purpose”

At the beginning of August, the president of the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM), Elena Costache, said that a pension in 70% of the net salary of a magistrate – about 11,309 lei – is insufficient and that the independence of the magistrates depends on the money.

“I should make an exact calculation, I have not done it yet. Now I will take a direct answer-yes, it seems a little and I will tell you and why it seems a little,” she told Digi24.

The head of the SCM has revealed and what salaries receive, on average, the magistrates.

“Let's see how much an average salary is. At the level of court of appeal, net monthly: 20,000 lei, has a comma … 346; court: 17.948; court: 16.157. To apply 70% of these amounts. (Would be 11,309 lei pension – no). Under what conditions? To go out with this pension. I do nothing as a judge, ”she said.

  • “I cannot, after judging a file, go to open a law consulting office and grant legal consultations and make some money. And then everyone agreed: not to fall into this sin of comparisons that are not meaningful.
  • From all points of view we are unique, I have no reason to avoid this word. First of all, the man you refer to I do not think he gave the exams we gave to reach the profession. It is not easy to become a magistrate, ”Costache added.
