Plans to take over the Gaza Strip. The UN warns against escalation

In the issued statement, Tuerk drew attention to the contradiction of these plans with the decision of the International Court of Justice. The Tribunal, in a judgment of 2024, recognized the Israeli occupation as illegal, ordering it to end as soon as possible. This judgment also indicated that a two -state solution, taking into account the right of Palestinians for self -determination, should be introduced. According to the Commissioner, the new escalation of actions threatens with mass displacement, numerous fatalities and further unbearable suffering of civilians.

“Even more suffering”
– The scale of threats we deal with is huge. Everything seems to indicate that the new escalation can lead to even greater mass displacements, more fatalities, greater unbearable suffering, senseless damage and cruel crimes Tuerk announced, at the same time appealing to Israel to provide the supply of humanitarian aid for the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip.
The Commissioner also expressed criticism against the Hamas terrorist organization, calling for release of hostages abducted from Israel in October 2023. “Access to humanitarian aid for the residents of the Gaza Strip is not sufficient and should be significantly increased” – said the head of Unhchr in an appeal addressed to the Israeli authorities.
Continuation of the war
On Thursday evening, the Israeli government decided to continue military activities in the Gaza Strip, which aim to completely seize this territory. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that although this territory is not to be annexed, the civil administration will take power after the liquidation of Hamas structures. These plans, despite the assurances of the Prime Minister, caused an objection to a part of the Israeli society, which is worried about the lives of hostages detained by Hamas.
Thousands of people decided on spontaneous protests in the evening in the largest cities of Israel, expressing concern with the escalation of the conflict. According to demonstrators of government, they can worsen the situation and make it difficult to make the negotiations lead to the release of hostages who still remain in the hands of Hamas. In addition, they arouse concerns about their survival in the conditions of intensive war.
