The president of the Romanian Academy, after the death of Ion Iliescu: “It is time to behave with dignity”

The president of the Romanian Academy, the historian Ioan-Aurel Pop, told Agerpres on Tuesday that Ion Iliescu was “the president of all Romanians in times of restraint” and we must “behave with dignity” after the death of the former head of state.
“The death of Ion Iliescu, the first president of Romania after the 'reign' of Nicolae Ceausescu, comes late, 35 years from the beginning of his first president. Many Romanians have been bored with such a long life and have found enough reasons for controversy, dispute, even in the public, I remember the team, How many were then.
The president of the Romanian Academy said that, in March 1991, Ion Iliescu came to Cluj to meet “the most important Romanian historian of Transylvania from the twentieth century, David Prodan”.
Ioan-Aurel Pop stated that David Prodan, who was to go out of his life in 1992, confessed that he had told Ion Iliescu, among others, not to accept to discuss with anyone the issue of Transylvania at the table of negotiations, as well as to forget that the president of the largest people in south-east Europe, which forced a great fact.
“The Romanians had not been able to know what democracy was, because they had only lived only their grandparents, and Ion Iliescu had been a great hope of change. The change came effectively: the communist constitution was abolished and it went to apply the rules of democracy and then to the elaboration of the 1991 Constitution,” Ioan-Aurel continued.

The president of the Romanian Academy described Ion Iliescu as a “left man, a follower of a democratic blood”.
“That they did not come out all his plans or that not all his plans were good, this is another story. He was the president of all Romanians in times of restraint, the first democrat president in the history of Romania, and this fact implies not only for the president or for the presidents, but also for the Romanian people,” he continued.
Reciting a brief passage from the poetry “sings the death” of Octavian Goga, the president of the Romania Academy said that “it is time to behave with dignity and remember the lyrics of the poet of our suffering:” Not as many have come to mind,/ But how much could be “.

Ion Iliescu died on Tuesday, at the age of 95. The former president will be buried on Thursday, August 7, when it will be a national mourning day. The burial ceremony will only take place in the presence of family and close persons.
