Rybachy is located in the Avachinsky bay, about 75 miles (120 km) to the west of the epicenter of the earthquake. The Bay also has a naval base in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and separate missile and ship repair enterprises.
Waves caused by an earthquake of magnitude 8.8 fell into the place where most of the atomic submarines of the Pacific Fleet of the Russian Federation are based, including the latest submarines of the Borea class and Soviet “delta”. The base is closest to the United States, not counting those that are directly in the ocean, writes The Telegraph.
On the frames taken in other places of the Pacific coast of the Russian Federation, strong destruction in the port of North-Kurilsk, which is about twice further from the epicenter of the earthquake, were recorded than the Avacha Bay.
Submarines can be damaged as a result of a strong blow to the mooring, and water can fall into open hatches or access points, the authors of the article suggest. In separate pictures of Umbra, two submarines are visible, which, after the tsunami, are still moored to their berths.
The boats undergoing maintenance would be especially vulnerable to powerful waves, not having the opportunity to sail and escape. However, experts emphasized that there are no signs of damage to the vessel, and the piers on which the submarines are designed for seismic blows.
