Folk calendar

Snake Festival

In Rus' there was a belief that on this day “snakes gather and go by train to a snake wedding.” Killing the many reptiles crawling through the forests was very dangerous: it was believed that the snake relatives would cruelly take revenge on anyone who harmed them, and not a single healer could save them from snake venom on that day.

In Rus' there was a belief that snakes are closely related to certain plants, and that they are able to influence each other. Many people often carried a piece of marina root in their amulet – it was credited with the ability to drive away snakes. They also believed that if fresh rue branches were scattered on the sunny edges early in the morning, snakes would rush towards them, eat everything and soon die. But the ash tree could not kill the reptile – but it was able to deprive him of his strength and ability to bite. Emerald was endowed with the same property – although, of course, this stone was not available to everyone.

On the snake holiday it was customary to plant beans. Before this, they were soaked in winter water, which was collected in forest ravines where snow had lain for a long time.
