President Nicușor Dan drew attention on Wednesday, in a Facebook post, that Romania is “one of the main countries of origin of victims of human trafficking”.
The head of state described the phenomenon as “a harsh reality”.
“Today, commemorating the International Day for the fight against human trafficking, we have a duty to recognize a harsh reality: Romania is unfortunately one of the main countries of origin of victims of human trafficking,” Nicușor Dan wrote.
He said that some victims do not resort to authorities “out of fear” or “from distrust”.
“Thousands of women, men and Romanian children have been exploited in recent years – in forced work, in sexual operating networks or in other forms of modern slavery, by the networks of traffickers who get rich from them. Many victims can not even call on the authorities, both for fear and not to be treated,”
The president recalled that he also addressed the subject in today's press conference, when, answering the question of a journalist, said he would give priority to efforts to combat human trafficking.
“I said today that the prevention and combating of this phenomenon begins by treating it seriously by the prosecutor's office, DIICOT, ANITP and Police, but also by implementing mechanisms of protection and socio-economic reintegration of the victims, as well as improving cross-border cooperation in the field, together with our international partners and from the civil society”.
