An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 hit the Kamchatka peninsula on Wednesday in the Far East of Russia, causing damage to buildings and generating a tsunami of up to 4 meters that caused the warning and evacuations throughout the Pacific Ocean, Reuters reports.
Three waves of tsunami hit the Russian port city of Severo-Kurilsk, the Sahalin region, the last of them defying the port infrastructure and snatching several vessels anchored in the straits, reports the Russian state press, quoted by the BBC.
The city has a population of about 2,000 inhabitants. The third wave was “strong”, wrote the Tass news agency.

The waves flooded part of the city. The inhabitants gathered on a hill and will stay there until the threat of tsunami passes.
Petopavlovsk-Kamchatsky International Airport works normally after the powerful earthquake, according to a recent statement of the airport authorities.
The flights take place according to the program, and the track is in “satisfactory condition”, although the earthquake damaged the ceiling panels at the airport, the authorities said.
The passengers in the waiting room were temporarily evacuated, and a person was injured in the earthquake, they added.
