People's calendar
Kirik and Ulita
On this day, the memory of the early Christian saints Kirik and Iulitta is celebrated (in the Russian folk tradition – Ulita).
In the Russian folk tradition, the day of Kirik and Sneet was considered the middle of the summer. They said that on this day the sun shines especially brightly. This, by the way, was associated with another saint who was remembered on this day – Vladimir, the baptist of Rus'. In the Russian epics of this Kyiv prince, the Kiev Krasnoye Sun is called, recognizing his huge merits in strengthening statehood and the spread of Orthodoxy in Rus'.
Women celebrated the day of “Mother Sneca”, called her their intercessor. Babam was supposed to relax as best as possible. Moreover, it was better not to go out in the field on this day: people believed that unclean power was walking there. It was said that one who is not afraid to reap on Kirik and Ulita can see a bad omen that will come true.
There is also a logical explanation for this custom. It was often raining on Kirik and Ulita, and there was simply nothing to do in the field. “Kiriki are always wet,” the peasants noted. However, they still tried to spend the day with benefit: they taught children to house labor so that they would become a support for their mothers.
