St. Petersburg authorities announced on Friday that the traditional naval parade dedicated to the Marine Day, scheduled for this weekend, will no longer take place, without specifying the reason. Shortly thereafter, the mention of cancellation was eliminated from the official statement, writes The Moscow Times.

“The events dedicated to the Marine Day will not take place in the waters of St. Petersburg on July 27. The fireworks show, the main parade of the fleet and the parade of sails, motor boats, rows and skijets have been canceled,” initially transmitted.

Subsequently, this statement was modified, the local authorities stating that they do not have the competence to comment on the event, as the organization of the event falls to the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Previously, the local publication Fontanka, citing sources close to the organizers, had reported that this year's parade was to be significantly reduced, being replaced with a ceremony for laying wreaths and symbolic festivities in the Palace Square of President Vladimir Putin.

In 2024, the main parade of Marine Day in St. Petersburg took place on July 28, but part of the program provided in the Kronstadt port city was canceled for security reasons.

At that time, the Russian press reported that the security services warned on the increased risk of a possible attack on the scheduled military vessels to participate in the parade.

The annual Marine Day parade from St. Petersburg was first organized in 2017, at the initiative of President Vladimir Putin. Similar events, of less extent, are usually organized in Vladivostok and Kaliningrad.
