A leakage of toxic mazut to the Black Sea is ongoing. This is the result of a disaster of Russian tankers


According to the Russian authorities, the toxic mazut (heavy heating oil, the remains of distillation of low -peculiar oil) still gets into the Black Sea from the tanker deck, despite the fact that he sank seven months ago.

The disaster of two tankers in the Kerch Strait took place on December 15, 2024 during a storm. Ships belonged to the shadow fleet, i.e. a group of dilapidated units that serve Russia to avoid oil sanctions and sell in global markets.
About 4,000 leaked into the Black Sea. tons of mazut with over 9,000 tons located on board of ships, causing mass death of birds and marine organisms.
In Anapa, a Black Sea resort, a bathing ban was introduced. The shoreline in the Krasnodar and Crimea country was contaminated, and the single lumps of Mazutu even reached the Odisian District in Ukraine. The authorities introduced a state of emergency, including on the occupied Crimean Peninsula.

The Russian authorities have announced that some of the eight tanks with petroleum products located on the ship were destroyed during the disaster, others sank and all are leaky.
“It is known that all petroleum products got into the sea – some during the disaster, and some still go to the basin,” said on Wednesday, July 23, a representative of the Russian Federal Service of Supervision over natural resources.
The Ministry of Extraordinary of Russia for the last time informed about works related to the purification of the Black Sea from the leaking Mazut on Friday, July 18. According to the department's data, from the beginning of the work, the service cleared over 740 km of coast and collected over 176 thousand. tons of polluted sand and soil.
