Although von der Leyen was praised for several bold ideas of reforms, her proposal to significantly increase the budget, introducing new EU taxes, including for enterprises and tobaccowithout thinking about savings in the least, it caused a huge irritation in the entire EU.
Justified the need for an additional EUR 800 billion (3 trillion 401 billion 600 million), among others, accumulated debt from the Pandemic period of Coronavirus and additional financial needs for the new fund for increasing competitiveness (EUR 451 billion, i.e. 1 trill 917 billion 652 million, including a space program) and further support for Ukraine (PLN 100 billion, i.e. PLN 425 billion, i.e. PLN 425 billion PLN million). Instead, he wants to limit help for agriculture, which threatens Brussels with numerous protests.
This proposal in the Netherlands, Sweden – in its own homeland, Germany, caused the greatest movement. Subsequently, finance minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD), Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and leading German EU politicians clearly stated: “this will not be.”
“The comprehensive increase in the EU budget is unacceptable at a time when all Member States make significant efforts to consolidate their national budgets,” said Stefan Kornelius, spokesman for chancellor's government Friedrich Merz in Berlin on Wednesday evening. – Therefore, we will not be able to accept the commission's proposals.
The EC has presented, among others, three new taxes regarding electric waste, tobacco products and high -turn -ranging enterprises, which are intended to repay the post -war debt, the cost of which is estimated at EUR 25-30 billion [106-127 mld zł] annually.
– We also do not support additional taxation of enterprises proposed by the European Commission – said Kornelius in Berlin.
From the point of view of the net payer, this proposal is unacceptable. Only the Green party MP Daniel Freund defends von der Leyen for her idea 2 trillion euros (8 trillion PLN 504 billion). – A moderate increase in the EU budget is basically not much more than leveling inflation – tells the diary “Bild”.

Von der Leyen apparently also recalculated as to the acceptance of the new EU tax, which wants to charge enterprises reaching an annual turnover above 100 million euros (PLN 425 million 200,000).
Markus Ferber (CSU), who was the longest incumbent MP Markus (CSU), described these activities as “completely contrary to the new competitiveness agenda.” He also critically assesses the planned additional EU tax on tobacco products.
