In Germany, in the first half of 2025, the number of asylum applications submitted – according to the report of the European Union agency for asylum (AUEA), in which “Welt am Sonntag” obtained insight. West Germany is no longer a European “asylum leader”. Spain leads in the EU, and France is right behind it.

From January 1 to June 30, 65,495 asylum applications were recorded in Germany, this means that there were 43 percent of them. less than in the first half of last year. Thus, Germany is no longer a European leader in terms of asylum reports, they are third in the EU.

In the first six months of 2025, the most applications were submitted in Spain (76 020) and France (75 428). Italy (62 534) is right behind Germany.
