On Thursday night, the atmosphere in Cipariu Square in Cluj-Napoca was electrified by DJ Padre Guilherme, a Catholic priest from Portugal who combines faith with the passion for music. Special guest at the event dedicated to the day of young Catholics, the priest went on stage and put music in front of hundreds of young people, right next to the Greek Catholic Cathedral.
The Portuguese priest sincerely explained the message to convey through his mix: “I have to put my soul on stage as a priest and I do, I mix this faith, but I do not only bring Christian messages, but also important messages in this world in which we live, such as respect for nature, for cultures, tolerance, peace that is a value that we must take care of with all the power of our prayers. “.
How did a priest get to become DJ
Guilherme was ordained in 1990. In 2005, after taking over a parish in financial difficulty, he sought solutions to raise money. Thus came the idea of a summer bar with Karaoke. There it all started.
“Then, with the people in the parish, we decided to open, during the summer, a bar with the young people in the choir, with Karaoke. And during the karaoke songs, I started to put music, but only from the laptop, with songs that I liked. And the people liked the priest who put music and I also liked it.”.
From that moment, the priest began to improve in the art of being DJ, following a school specialized in 2013. Everything remained in the parish activities, but the success increased rapidly. “Every year I began to develop the art of being DJ, and people considered it funny to see a DJ priest.”.
Over the years, he has managed to raise funds for the renovation of the church and the construction of spaces dedicated to young people. Before the show in Cluj, DJ Padre said: “And now I have arrived in Romania, I put music for young people and I will bring Romanian Greek-Catholic songs on stage ”.
The third visit to Romania
This was not the first experience of the DJ priest in Romania. He returned for the third time, and the emotions were as intense as in the beginning. “I feel as if it were a time spent in a family, and not only I felt this, but also my team. You know how to make us feel special, the soul of the Romanian people is amazor “.
Faith, expressed by electronic music
For DJ Padre, music is more than a hobby, it is a form of expression of faith. “The language is electronic, and the message is not only a message, but a journey that you do during an hour or half hours.”.
In addition to the energy of rhythms, his messages emphasize joy, peace, tolerance and respect for cultural diversity and nature. “I try to put all this on stage in my playlist”.
Young people and religion: “Let us show God through our lives”
In a context in which more and more young people are moving away from religion, DJ Padre claims that the personal example is essential. “We must show God not only by words, not only through music, but also through our lives ”he said.
The priest believes that an authentic presentation of Jesus Christ as a model can be the key to rejecting the interest of the young generation towards faith.
DJ Padre Guilherme demonstrates that music and religion can go hand in hand, when they are united by passion, sincerity and the desire to transmit positive values.
