Traian Basescu, who on Tuesday received a win at the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR), suggested that the legislative modification by which certain benefits had been withdrawn by the former president had been made for him.
“It was done for one man. While the security officers have special pensions, they took my rights,” said Traian Basescu, according to observatornews.ro.
Regarding the steps to be followed to recover the privileges after the CCR victory, the former head of the state said that he must consult with his lawyers.
“To see, I will see. It is time to make decisions,” said Traian Basescu.
The RCC on Tuesday established that the legislative modification by which certain privileges of the former President Traian Basescu were withdrawn is contrary to the Constitution. Following the decision he can receive the following benefits back:
- a protocol housing, with the destination of residence, which also includes a space with the destination of work office, framed with a position of counselor and a post of secretary;
- a monthly allowance in the amount equal to 75% of the allowance granted to the President of Romania in exercise;
- Guard and protection, as well as free use of a car, permanently provided by the protection and security service.
The CCR decision came three years after Traian Basescu appealed the changes made to Law 406/2001, by which the privileges due to the former presidents were withdrawn.
The contested legal provision, introduced in 2021 and applied in 2022, provided that the former heads of state can no longer receive certain benefits if it was established by final decision that they had links with the former Security, as it happened in the case of Traian Basescu, in March 2022, by the final decision of the High Court of Cassation and Justice.
