Populist environments in Poland and Germany exert pressure on the governments of those countries that restore controls on the borders, which threatens the functioning of Schengen – commented on Wednesday the Spanish portal El Independiente.

“The rule (German chancellor) Friedrich Merz and Donald Tusk are under the pressure of populists from an alternative to Germany (AfD) and PiS and confederations, which use the fear of migration waves to mobilize their voters,” wrote the Spanish portal.
As El Independiente emphasized, migration is a permanent topic raised by conservative parties in Poland, which the victory of Karol Nawrocki in the last presidential election “added wings”. The portal pointed out that Germany has already introduced partial controls on its borders.
“Tusk knows that the opposition will use every opportunity to cause confusion and convince public opinion that he has no control over borders and that the government is too indulgent with Germany,” said the portal.
On Tuesday, the daily El Pais wrote that in Poland “moods against immigrants of African or Asian origin are quite common”, and subsequent governments have exacerbated migration policy.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced a temporary restoration of control at the Polish border with Germany and Poland with Lithuania. He emphasized that this is necessary to reduce uncontrolled flows of migrants. According to the draft regulation, which appeared on Wednesday on the pages of the Government Legislation Center, the border controls of persons will be restored on July 7 and will apply until August 5.
