The Greek health minister Adonis Georgiades has announced that the law that will tighten the rules on the sale of tobacco and alcohol will be published on Friday in the Official Gazette, Euronews, taken over by Rador Radio Romania.

As he has already emphasized in an interview, from now on the sale of tobacco products to minors will have criminal consequences, and in Greece it will no longer be possible to do what has been done for many decades, that is, adults to send children to buy cigarettes.

“We are preparing a very strict law to protect our minors from both alcohol and tobacco. On Friday, when the law will enter into force, there will be no tricks through which minors can buy alcoholic beverages. At the same time, at all points of sale of cigarettes, it will be compulsory to present an identity or electronic act”.

“What we often do in Greece will no longer be possible.”

“What we often do in Greece, when a parent tells a child” go and take me a pack of cigarettes from the kiosk “, on Friday it will no longer be possible.

For months, Brussels, with the collaboration of 15 other Member States, has been pressuring taxes and, therefore, tobacco prices. The purpose being to complicate the purchase of cigarettes and similar products and thus to discourage people from consuming them, especially young people.

Thus, in Greece, a pack of cigarettes could reach and even exceed the price of 6-7 euros.

The Greek government, as well as those in Italy, Bulgaria and Romania oppose large increases, stressing that they will have an unpleasant effect on national economies and that where prices have grown, smuggling has blossomed.

In any case, this decision requires unanimity between the Member States, and the divisions between the capitals suggest that it will take a long time until it is taken (if taken).
