Manuilo and Saveliy
On this day, the church celebrates the memory of three brothers – Manuel, Savel and Ismail.
In Rus', the Day of Three Saints (of which, however, more often remembered Manuilo and Savelia), overlapped the ancient holiday of the “Yarilka”, dedicated to the god of the Sun Yarila. And Christian customs mixed with pagan rites and folk beliefs.
In many areas on Manuilo and Savely (Manuila and Savel), fairs and peasant festivals were held, bearing the name “Young Yarilo”. The next bazaar day, which was arranged on the eve of Ivan Kupala, was already called “old Yarilo.”
The people said that on Manuilo the Sun “stagnates”, there are frost-tumans, dairy rivers flow. The day was called bad: at this time, evil spirits approached the huts and tried to kill a person. Sometimes you could hear someone plaintively calling: “Go out the gate! Give me your sleep!”, Or asks for fire. It was impossible to comply with these requests in any case, otherwise the mor would attack the peasant court.
They were afraid on this day and white cows, which suddenly appeared at the gate. They said that so unclean power pretends to be cattle so that it is put in stable with other cows. If the evil spirits did, she spoiled all the milk.
On behalf of Manuilo, two more nicknames appeared – Manikha and Mania. That was the name of the evil old woman and her daughter, who went through the villages on this day and lured people into the forests to give them to the goblin. The girls maniah maniah to the river behind white water lilies (they just bloomed at this time), and then dragged to the very bottom.
On this day, it was customary to breed bonfires on the shores of rivers and lakes and cook eggs. It was believed that the more you cook, the better the chickens would be rushed. Other dishes made of eggs were also cooked – for example, omelets: with bread, with onions, with cheese.
There were and their weather signs for this day. Bright lightning foreshadowed a good harvest, and the evening rainbow – good weather. But the crimson sunset promised a strong wind and bad weather.
