As she assessed, “This means the beginning of a new life for one of the most important industrial monuments of Upper Silesia.”

Weber clarified that in the revitalized heat and power plant: the Museum and the Educational Center devoted to the history of industry, the future of energy and environmental transformation, cultural zone with exhibition and artistic spaces, gastronomic and conference facilities, as well as sports facilities and a hotel base.
“Based on the already functioning post -industrial attractions of Zabrze, such as the Guido I mine (adjacent to EC Zabrze – PAP), the Queen Luiza Adit, CHP plant is to be not only a complement to them, but also thanks to its location, the starting point for their sightseeing” – said Weber.
The history of the Zabrze CHP plant dates back to 1896, when the construction of the power plant began. A year later, the installation began to produce electricity. It was an impulse for the development of energy in Silesia and the development of Zabrze, which did not have city rights at the time.
As a result of the modernization and expansion of devices in the interwar period, the power plant became one of the largest in the region. The destruction and plunder after World War II meant that the production power was reduced by half. The operation of the plant was maintained, and in the 1970s, it was transformed into a heat and power plant. He became part of Fortum in 2011. The company built a new heat and power plant in Zabrze for Zabrze and Bytom, and the former plant handed over to the city.
By passing the former EC to the local government, Fortum signaled that there are buildings with historical value that can be used for cultural and educational purposes. The total volume of facilities in the transferred areas exceeds 220 thousand. Subicant, which can be referred, for example, to the cubature of the castle in Malbork (250,000 cubic meters).
The Arche Group has been the owner of one of the most important monuments in Upper Silesia – Szombierki CHP plant since 2022. Until now, the company has conducted works related to its ordering and securing, among others roofs and walls. In the spring of this year President Arche Władysław Grochowski signaled that the first stage of regeneration of EC Szombierki should be completed within about two years. (PAP)
