PSD Senator Dan Caşcaval, rector of the “Gheorghe Asachi” Technical University in Iaşi does not understand why among the first measures announced by the new government are the reduction of students' scholarships. Dan Caşcaval states that he knows what the partnership means in a ruling coalition, but does not understand why the financial measures to be taken by the new government are not prioritized, notes News.ro.

“I am a rector and I am a PSD senator. I know what the partnership with the students means. I do not understand why we do not prioritize the financial measures we have to take. I do not understand why among the first measures announced are the students of the students, of the students who played a significant role in obtaining an essential vote for our European course,”

According to him, the students are amazed by the “priority” they have acquired in the application of the financial program.

“I advised him to look for a way of dialogue, balanced, maybe something wrongly understood. And to resort to the support of the National Council of the Rectors, from the leadership of which there are also parliamentarians of a part of the ruling coalition and the prime minister's counselor. It is an approach that they have implemented and I am convinced that we can find a way.”

At the same time, the cheese has agreed that the students' scholarships are related to the net value of the minimum wage, but added that this calculation had to be made from the beginning, after which it would be permanently updated.

“To resume this calculation now and report it to the net minimum wage, even if it seems rational in the essence of the calculation, it is too late to be justified by the essence of the calculation,” said the PSD parliamentarian.

“I am a rector. And without being subjective, I agree that this measure had to be among the first. Maybe, if the other proposed measures were implemented, obviously more accepted by all (justified thinning of the budgetary apparatus, increasing the collection of taxes, VAT, taxes, etc., not granting the social aid than in justified situations, etc.), etc. budget for scholarships, ”said PSD senator.

He said that “a dialogue can still be worn between the parties involved, but not in the street.”

Students and students protesting on the streets of scholarships

Dozens of students and students protested on Thursday and Friday in the Capital, but also in other cities in the country, compared to the Government's intention to reduce the funds allocated for scholarships and the number of beneficiaries.

On Wednesday, Education Minister Daniel David announced that the school scholarship system is to be reorganized. The new proposed formula involves retaining only two categories of scholarships:

  • Social scholarships, intended for students from vulnerable environments, will continue to include the support given to minor mothers. These scholarships will be managed by the local social assistance authorities, based on a methodology initiated by the ministry.
  • The merit scholarships will be awarded to students with averages of at least 9 (currently 9.50), within 15% of the total students in a class (currently a 30% limit). After the reorganization of the Olympics and competitions, the winners' prizes will be increased.

Thus, four types of scholarships will be cut – those for the Olympics (I and II), the technological ones, and those for minor mothers will be included in the social scholarships.

The president of the National Alliance of Student Organizations in Romania, Sergiu Covaci, said on Friday that students will continue the protests related to scholarships, the next protest will take place on Sunday.

“Next, we expect the Ministry of Education to take a more vehement position in relation to all this situation, in relation to the government, with whom are the ones initiating these documents, because we feel a state of relaxation regarding this subject. This is precisely to show these days and we will continue the protests. The university and we will go to Victoriei Square, where we invite all students and students, parents, universities, all from the pre -university, because it is a subject who think they are interested in everyone, ”said Sergiu Covaci, quoted by Agerpres.
