Advanced the process of accession of the Republic of Moldova to the EU, among the recommendations of the European Council

The 27 leaders gathered within the European Council recommended to the European Commission to undertake the following steps in order to access the Republic of Moldova at the EU. They also appreciated the progress made by Chisinau during its European course.

The members of the European Council mentioned that they are waiting for “with interest” the first summit of the Republic of Moldova that will take place on July 4, reiterating the firm support of the European Union for “Sovereignty, territorial integrity, resilience and economic development of the Republic of Moldova. The European Union will continue to collaborate closely with the Republic of Moldova to strengthen the resilience and stability of this country facing persistent destabilization activities carried out by Russia, including hybrid attacks, meant to undermine the country's democratic institutions ”.

At the same time, the European Council reiterated the firm support of the European Union for the Republic of Moldova in its accession process.

“The European Council congratulates the Republic of Moldova for the rhythm of its reforms related to accession, welcomes the significant progress registered and encourages the Republic of Moldova and the Commission to intensify the works in the accession process. The European Council invites the Council to move to the following stages in the accession process in accordance with the approach based on merit, the thematic groups are opened when the conditions are met. It takes note of the evaluation of the commission according to which the thematic group of the fundamental elements is ready to be open ”, It is shown in the conclusions of the European structure on June 26.

“European future for Moldovan citizens”

Cristina Gherasimov, the Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, thanked the 27 state leaders who reiterated the firm support of the EU for the European course, claiming that “It is an unprecedented recognition of our efforts and an important signal that, during its European course, Moldova enjoys the plenary support of all 27 EU Member States.”

And the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, came up with a message in this context.

,We appreciate the recognition of our progress in terms of reforms and we remain employees in building a European future for all Moldovan citizens ”, wrote the leader from Chisinau on the X platform.

The Republic of Moldova filed the request for accession to the European Union on March 3, 2022, more than a week from the beginning of the War in Ukraine. Chisinau obtained the status of country candidate for the Union in July of the same year, at the same time as Kiev.

On June 15, 2024, the ambassadors of the 27 Member States of the European Union gave the “principle agreement” for opening the accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, the announcement being made by the Belgian presidency of the EU Council.
