Denis-Laurean Popescu (21 years old) managed, in the European U23 championships, to beat the national record at 100 meters butterfly. The Romanian swimmer has removed the best time from the series and qualified in the final of the competition, where he will be accompanied by his compatriot Vlad-Stefan Mihalache.

On Thursday, June 26, at Samorin, Slovakia, the European U23 championships began, where Romania sent a delegation of 13 athletes. At the end of the first session, 4 Romanians obtained the qualification in the final, including David Popovici, who dominated the 200 m free race.

Denis Popescu had the best time of series to 100 m butter

The pleasant surprise of the session was made by Denis-Laurean Popescu, a swimmer from Reșița, Caraș-Severin. He entered the 4th series of 100 m butterfly and removed a time of 51.49 seconds, managing to beat the national record.

Popescu had the best time in the series and qualified from the first place in the final that will take place today, at 20:17live on TVR Sport. From the 7th position, with a time of 52.79, Stefan Mihalache was qualified in the final.

In June 2024, at the European Championships in Belgrade, Popescu managed a time of 52.32 seconds per 100 m butterfly. One year away, the 21 -year -old swimmer has released 51.49 seconds, setting a new national record for this sample.

According to the official website of the World Natation Federation, Popescu holds the national record at 100 meters butterfly and in the short basin (51,44).

In addition to Popescu and Mihalache, two other athletes from Romania qualified in the final of the tests they competed in. Alexandru Constantinescu will participate in the final of the 200 m rear test, at 7:05 pm, and David Popovici will be able to be watched, in the final of the 200 m free test, starting at 7:24 pm.
