Will there be a new tax for banks? The Minister of Finance announces

Minister of Finance Andrzej Domański was asked on Wednesday on Radio ZET about whether his ministry is currently working on tax on bank outdoor profits. “We are not working on tax on the excessive profits of banks. Banks' profits are simply a derivative of the policy pursued by the NBP, only that relatively high interest rates are still maintained, at least compared to the euro area countries. Polish banks are also relatively poorly capitalized against the background of Western European banks, but of course we see some ineffectiveness,” said Domański.
“Among other things, such ineffectiveness is the fact that the obligatory reserve, which banks maintain at the National Bank of Poland, is high -interest, i.e. a rate above 5 percent, while in Europe practically nowhere mandatory reserves, i.e. funds that banks must keep in the central bank, are not interest -related. mandatory kept by banks in the NBP, “said the minister.
The head of the Ministry of Finance added that, according to his estimates, about 1.5, perhaps PLN 2 billion “could go to the budget next year.
