People's calendar
Fedor Kolodeznik
The Orthodox Church celebrates on this day the memory of the great martyr Theodore Stratilat, who lived in the 3-4 centuries. In Rus', the great martyr Theodore Stratilat is revered as the patron saint of the Orthodox army.
Also, this day was considered to be the Polodyzniki – masters specializing in the construction of wells. In the evening, on Fedor (Theodore), they laid the pans intended for wells, and the next morning, by how much the pan fossed, they made conclusions: there are water underground or it is better to dig a well in another place. Often the place for the well was determined by the morning fog: where he lies at the dawn, and you need to dig there. Stores in Rus' have always been endowed with healing properties.
In the morning, the peasants went to meadows to find out about the future crop. There was even a special concept – the “Stratilatov dew”, which were revered for the prophetic. If the dew on Fedor was plentiful, it promised a good harvest of flax and hemp.
From Fedorov, the day began “dungar” – the so -called time when they took out manure in the field. In this work, which before, by the way, was not considered either “black” or “dirty”, the whole family took part. Men loaded manure on carts, the children were workers, and women and youth dumped manure into the fields and evenly distributed it on the soil. The old people were preparing for all lunch, which must certainly have consisted of 12 dishes – “so that every month was well -fed.”
They treated the manure in Rus' with respect, understanding the need to fertilize the earth. There were many sayings about him: “a horse is oats, and the earth is manure”; “Where is the extra dung peg, there is excess bread of the rug” “” “” “;” We will take the dawn, so we will bring bread “;
On this day, thunderstorms often happened: “Fedor Stratilat is rich in thunderstorms.” This was not a good sign: the thunder and lightning on Fedor foreshadowed the thin cleaning of hay. And very loud peals of thunder testified that bad weather would last a long time.
