The Italian defense minister Guido Crosetto said on Friday that “NATO is no longer a reason for being”. He also expressed the opinion that the European Union and the UN “do not count”.

Crosetto, quoted by the Ansa agency, told journalists in Padua: “Once the center of the world was the Atlantic Ocean.”

“Once the US and Europe were in the center; now there is all the rest of the world with which relations need to be built,” said the head of the Italian Ministry of Defense.

He then emphasized: “If NATO was created to guarantee peace and mutual defense, it would either take care of this task by talking to the south of the world, and therefore will become something deeply different or we will not achieve the purpose of security within the rules of the rules that apply to everyone.”

“We often speak as if we lived 30 years ago, but everything has changed,” he assessed.

Minister Crosetto added: “It is talked about Europe, as if she was counting. Maybe she could count if she had ever been given a political role, which is not there if she got a foreign policy or defense. But this time ended, I say it sadly. The world has changed.”

“The UN counts as much as Europe in the world, nothing (…), less than China, less than India or Israel,” believes the Italian defense minister, who at the University of Padua gave a lecture on sleeplessness. (PAP)
