Romania currently has no dependence on Russia in the field of oil, natural gas and nuclear energy, said Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja, Agerpres reports. He argues that Romania will be able to export gases to neighboring countries “at a good price”, so that the rest of Europe will become completely independent of Russian imports.
“Since the beginning of the Russia's aggression war against Ukraine, we had the goal to eliminate any dependence in the energy field as soon as possible and not to supply the aggressor's war efforts. And we have succeeded: Romania currently has any addiction to Russia, natural gas and nuclear energy. Imports from Russia. Unlike others, we did things, not only we talked about them or we found pretexts “why cannot”, wrote the Minister of Energy on his Facebook page.
According to him, through the Repowereu Plan of 2022 and later by the Declaration of the leaders from Versailles, the EU has established its objective to stop any energy import of oil and natural gas from Russia by 2027. These objectives become achievable through the recent regulation adopted by the European Commission on June 17, 2025 for the complete cessation of the imports of natural gas from Russia, enters the European market. Romania has supported, through the Ministry of Energy, this proposal.
“We cannot have security, we cannot a competitive industry and accessible energy prices, if we depend on others, the worse on an aggressor such as Russia, an energy blackmail expert. And not only support the European objectives, but we also contribute to their implementation. The Neptun Deep project, recognized in the communication of the European Commission as a regional stability factor, will offer about 8-10 million meters. In the first 10 years, with the reserve estimated at over 100 billion cubic meters, ”said Sebastian Burduja.
He mentioned that this project will strengthen Romania in the largest gas producer in the EU, a position already obtained last year, doubling the current production and making our country a net gas exporter-a surplus of 4-5 billion cubic meters / year is anticipated.
According to the European Commission, Neptun Deep, in combination with European infrastructure (LNG and TAP), can supplement about 10 billion cubic meters per year, contributing to the gradual elimination of Russian gases.
“Through the collaboration of Romgaz & OMV Petrom we have already started the drilling for 10 wells, with the American Transocean Barents drilling platform, and Neptun Deep will be prepared for production in 2027. Through this project, one of Romania's largest and ambitious field, we strengthen the internal and European energy autonomy, we protect the Romanian consumers and the accessible to natural gas and prices. We generate substantial revenues of over 20 billion euros in the budget (exports, taxes, jobs), we promote a balanced energy transition ”, writes the Minister of Energy.
He recalled that Romania has taken immediate measures after the beginning of the Ukraine war so that our country is completely decoupled from the Russian influence
“Compared to others who waited to see” who wins “, since I was the Minister of Digitization I have taken harsh measures against the Russian aggressor. I forbade by the law promoted by me the Russian antivirus solutions in Romania. Now we banned their gas and access to the Romanian market. The next measure must be the conviction of EU states to completely decoupling from Russian gas and oil and strengthen, Romania, domestic production to give the neighbors at a good price for our country. Our grandparents and great -grandparents deserve to be avenged for the torments worn because of the red army and communism in Romania, ”wrote Sebastian Burduja.
