On Thursday, the European Commission approved 192 million euros of public aid from Poland for the construction of a gaming and technological hub in Katowice – the EC informed in a communiqué. The investment is to be co -financed from the Fund for Just Transformation.

The Katowice Gaming and Technology Hub is being built in the former “Wieczorek” Coal Coal Mine. This is to be a place intended primarily for the gaming and technological industry, including activities related to the development of artificial intelligence.

Public aid will have the form of a direct subsidy. The Commission decided that support is in line with the EU principles of state aid and meets the provisions of EU treaties, enabling supporting the development of certain sectors of the economy.

“Help is necessary and suitable for the implementation of the project, which will bring significant socio -economic benefits for the creative sector and the area of ​​fair transformation in Katowice,” the EC announced.

At the end of 2024, offers submitted to the tender for the first stage of the gaming and technological hub were opened. Eight contractors proposed amounts from PLN 577.1 million to PLN 829.4 million. The lowest offer exceeded the amount of PLN 177.3 million expected by the local government.

The first stage of the construction of the hub should be completed within 32 months from the date of signing the contract, which is to take place within two months. Therefore, the investment should be completed at the beginning of 2028.

The first stage of construction of the gaming and technological hub is to include the revitalization and adaptation of the existing buildings of the former KWK “Wieczorek”. Both those from the beginning and the first half of the twentieth century (characteristics and bathroom, engine room, sorting plant, nut with a tower, mechanical workshops and forge, carpentry, lamp and shelter), like from the 1970s and 80s of the 20th century (Nowa Łaźnia and a new lamp over Szopienicka Street). In addition, it provides for the construction of an underground passage and road infrastructure with parking spaces. The contractor should also develop the area around the buildings.

In the second stage, the construction of a hall with an area of 5,000 sq m, which will include E-sports and television studies, production spaces, warehouses and laboratories, as well as building space for production service and for 2,000 guests.
