Argentina states that she has detected a group of Russian spies that carried out “suspicious activities” in the country to promote Moscow's interests, making false information, the spokesman of the Argentine Presidency, Manuel, quoted by AFP and Agerpres said on Wednesday.

Argentine intelligence services have identified an organization, called the “company”, suspected of having links with the Russian government and the Lakhta project (Lahta), considered by the US to an operation of Russian misinformation meant to influence public opinions in its territory, as well as in Europe.

Adorni stated during a press conference that Russian citizen Lev Konstantinovici Andriașvili, installed in Argentina, was leading this organization with his wife and compatriot Irina Iakovenko.

Both were in charge of “receiving financing and promoting links with local collaborators.”

The objective of the “company” was to constitute a group of people loyal to Russia's interests, to develop misinformation campaigns against the Argentine state, the spokesman stressed.

“Argentina will not be subject to the influence of another nation,” said Adornei.

Among the identified activities were the creation and dissemination of content on social networks, influencing civilian organizations and local NGOs, developing discussion groups with Argentine citizens, as well as obtaining political information for Russia.

The spokesman said that this information was not secret, but that the Russian spies also targeted classified material, “state secret”.

The new Argentine President Javier Milei is a well -known critic of Moscow and, just a month after being elected president in November 2023, decided to annul the decision taken by the previous administration on Argentina in BRICS – the informal group of emerging countries that takes its name from Brazil, Russia, India and Africa.

Milei said from the election campaign that under his leadership Argentina will not be part of the BRICS group, reasoning that he does not want to “encourage agreements with the Communists, because they do not respect the basis of free exchange, freedom and democracy.”

“Each state has the right to choose their own way of development. No one obliges anyone to enter BRICS,” the head of the International State Duma Commission, Leonid Sluţki, reacted at that time.
