Romanians, first place in Southeast Europe on sushi consumption

Romania occupies the first place in Southeast Europe at the request for sushi in the last 12 months, our country being one of the most dynamic markets in the region for this type of preparation.

According to a study by a home delivery platform, for the third consecutive year, February 14 – Valentine's Day was the day with the most sushi orders in Romania, with about 60 portions of sushi per hour.

In 2025, this day exceeded even the weekend days, and immediately after February 14, the Romanians ordered significant sushi portions and on March 8 (Women's Day)-confirming that sushi is a favorite option for special occasions and pampering moments.

The analysis shows that 7:00 pm is the peak of sushi orders in Romania, and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday are the days when consumption is increasing. On average, on a weekend day there is an increase of 21% compared to a regular day during the week.

Cities in Romania where the most sushi is ordered

According to the data, Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iași, Brașov and Constanța are the cities from which most orders for sushi are placed. Bucharest not only is in the first place for consumption, but it also has the most “passionate” fans. Thus, the largest individual command of sushi in Romania was registered in the Capital, with a value of over 2,300 lei. Also from Bucharest comes the largest order, over 400 servings of sushi in just 12 months.

Among all the types of sushi, Maki remains the favorite of the Romanians: 1 out of 2 portions ordered was Maki, which makes him a detached leader. The following favorite types are: Nigiri, Inari, Sashimi and Uramaki. When it comes to combinations of ingredients, Romanians are loyal to the classic. The salmon remains in the forehead, followed by the cream cheese and shrimp, used both in rolls and in Tempura.

Globally, sushi demand increased by over 20% this year

According to Glovo data, the demand for sushi increased by 21% globally in the first half of this year, compared to the previous year, and Romania had an important contribution in this increase. The number of users who ordered Sushi increased by 17% worldwide, confirming the tendency to globalize this Japanese delicacy.
