Slovakia-Romania 2-1 was not only the end of the road of small “tricolors” at Euro 2025, but also the end of our adventure through Austria, Germany and Slovakia, as journalists

  • The EURO U21 journal is a unique project. One of the GSP journalists present at Euro 2025 will publish texts with color details, common things, unseen experiences of journalism at the grass.
  • Ionuț Iordache is head of the Department of Internal Football, Photoreporter and journalist with decades of experience.

I left Romania with my colleagues, Cezar Titor, Remus Dinu and Andrei Crăiţoiu on May 29 and, since then, I have witnessed many epic and emotional moments around the football fields in Germany, Austria and Slovakia.

I saw Luis Enrique rejoicing like a child after the Champions League final and paying homage to his daughter, dead six years ago.

We changed two words on the lawn and made a selfie with Alessandro del Piero, just before entering a television in Italy.

I watched the glitter Lamine Yamal in the semifinal of the League of Nations with France and on the Yamal Lamine delete with Portugal.

The huge Ronaldo cried like a child

I lived live the madness that is created on a football stadium when Cristiano Ronaldo appears on the field.

I saw the huge Portuguese footballer, with almost 1,000 goals scored in his fantastic career, How does it not have the power to look at the penalties beaten by colleagues Its in the final with Spain and then how it falls to the knee of joy, with tears in the eyes.

Then, I stayed five meters from a recharged Ronaldo, in the mixed area, when he spoke with journalists far over the 2-3 questions initially established by the Press Officer of the Lusitanians.

We then moved to Vienna, where I saw Mircea Lucescu increasingly and lonely.

There I felt lively the heat transmitted to the land by the “yellow wall”, although the whole match rained, and the “tricolors” made a match at least mediocre.

Euro U21, three images of soul

But I lived the most beautiful moments in Slovakia, along with the U21 national.

Even though we lost all the matches and were quickly eliminated from the competition, they remain with many moments of soul.

I will never forget the image with Tony Strate, who sought his mother in the stand and went directly to her after defeating Italy.

Or the one in which Rareș Burnete is consoled by his girlfriend, also after the failure of the first match.

Or the moment when Andrei Borza is kissed on the crest and taken in his arms by his sister, Bianca, after the dramatic match with Spain.

In a time when misogynism and hatred against women seem to be expanding again, these three images reminded me how lucky we are if we have a mother, a girlfriend, a sister or a daughter in our lives. How much we need them when we have our heads and how much we should value them when we raise our heads.

And I can hardly wait to hold my little girl, Alexandra, when I get home, and say, “I miss you. I love you!”
