Global expenses for nuclear weapons increased by 11 percent. in 2024

The ICAN report indicates that increased expenses result mainly from the costs of modernizing nuclear arsenals, although in a few cases they were also associated with their expansion – but it was not indicated which states were about. In 2023, global expenses amounted to $ 91.4 billion, which was an increase of about 10 percent. compared to 2022.
Of the other countries China allocated $ 12.5 billion for nuclear weapons, and Great Britain – 10.4 billion. Other countries officially with nuclear weapons are: Russia, France, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea.
As Alicia Sanders-Zakre from ICAN pointed out, the increase in expenditure was mainly the result of the growing costs of long-term contracts and investments in nuclear weapon transfer systems, and did not necessarily result from security threats.
Ican, an organization founded in Geneva in 2007, was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017 for actions for the global ban on nuclear weapons and paying attention to its catastrophic effects.
In the context of these reports, it is worth noting that at night from Thursday to Friday Israel conducted an attack on Iranian nuclear installations, aimed at stopping the alleged Tehran nuclear program. According to the Israeli side, Iran was close to building his own nuclear weapon, which the authorities in Tehran strongly deny.
