The energy colossus raised in alert rhythm at Mintia. Burduja: “It is the largest gas power plant in Europe, in one place”

The new power plant Mintia could produce energy this year. The construction works of the power plant, with a capacity of over 1,700 MW, advanced at an alert rate, says Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja.

Until December 2025, the first capacities installed at the Mintia power plant could become operational.

Energy Minister: The Central will produce energy from 2025

The new power plant, built in the vicinity of Deva, will thus produce the first MW, said Sebastian Burduja (video), the Minister of Energy, present on Thursday, June 12, in Mintia (Hunedoara County).

“What happened here is a true miracle of the technique-a record after another. It is the largest gas power plant, built in one place, with a total capacity of 1,734 MW. The turbines, generators and transformers have record dimensions, and their transport and reassembly were a world premiere.”said Sebastian Burduja.

According to the Minister of Energy, the stage of the project for the first cycle has exceeded 75 percent and chances are that, by the end of 2025, the first part of this project will be put into operation.

“This means somewhere at 570 MW. Immediately, over another month, there will be another turbine, so we will overcome MIA of MW, after which, somewhere in the middle of next year, the whole installed power will be available. Think for Romania, it is an infrastructure of national importance, as the Government has declared it, it is a good one. The country from the last two decades. said Sebastian Burduja.

By the end of this year will be the gas bus that will connect the power plant to the national system, he added.

Termocentral fed with gas from the Black Sea

The new power plant Mintia is built in the old thermoelectric power station, located on the Mureșului bank, about six kilometers from Deva.

In the last two years, here have been brought, for installation, high -tech components meant to ensure the functioning of the future gas power plant. The Romanian Government declared the project “Massia Power Plant” as being of national importance in the field of electricity.

In parallel with the re -technology of the power plant, works are held on the infrastructure necessary to connect it to the national energy system.

The gas pipeline that will feed it is built on the route Sântămăria Orlea – Mintia, with a length of about 60 kilometers. The investment, worth over 60 million euros, is supported by the Ministry of Energy.

The new power plant in Mintia, with a power of over 1,700 MW, represents a total private investment of 1.4 billion euros.

It will operate on a natural gas and will include two gas turbines, a steam turbine and three SGEN5-3000W generators from Siemens. At the same time, the components of the boiler will be prepared for the transition to the new energy production technologies, based on hydrogen. Investors estimated that the project will generate about 700 jobs.

The “Steaua on Mureș” set up after five decades

The old power plant from Mintia, also called “Steaua de Mureș”, was built in the 1970s and produced energy using coal extracted from the mines in the Jiu Valley, as well as import coal.

The Mintia power plant was stopped in March 2021, ensuring, until then, not only the production of coal -based electricity, but also the supply of heat and hot water for about 4,000 houses and public buildings in Deva, including 11 educational units connected to the thermal network managed by the boiler.

Stopping the power plant, mainly determined by the lack of investments necessary to comply with the environmental standards imposed by the European Union, caused protests from trade unionists and disputes between politicians and representatives of the former Hunedoara Energy Complex.

Some politicians and employees of the boiler claimed that it would be sold for scrap iron, while others proposed to take over the complex, located near Deva, by the Hunedoara County Council or Deva City Hall.

In July 2021, the Mintia power plant has officially ceased its activity, and almost 700 employees were made available. A year later, in August 2022, the Romanian state sold the Mintia Mass Global Energy Rom for the amount of 91 million euros.

The investor has committed to invest over one billion euros in the modernization and development of the production capacity, in order to transform the power plant into a unit adapted to European standards, oriented towards the production of energy from renewable sources.
