The support of Ukraine by the Minister and Belgium is unprecedented

Belgium provides military and financial assistance to Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the aggressor country of the Russian Federation. In addition, Belgium froze € 50.5 billion of Russian assets as part of sanctions. These funds can be used for post -war recovery of Ukraine. On October 11, 2023, the Prime Minister of Belgium (2020–2025), Alexander de Croo, said that Belgium was creating a Ukrainian fund for € 1.7 billion, the source of which will be income from blocked assets of the Russian Federation in this country. According to him, these funds will be aimed at “military equipment, humanitarian support, as well as to the European mechanism of the world, macroeconomic assistance.”

In March 2024, the Belgian government approved the allocation of an additional € 412 million to Ukraine to combat Russian aggression.

Since the beginning of 2024, Belgium has transferred assistance to € 575.7 million to Ukraine, and by the end of the year it amounted to € 1 billion.

In July, de Kroo and Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmygal signed an agreement that provides that Belgium will finance the recovery projects in Ukraine for € 150 million.

On May 16, 2025, Franken said that in the announced military package of assistance to Ukraine for € 1 billion in 2025, the overwhelming part of assistance, € 645 million, is of Belgian origin. The Belgian government approved a package of assistance to Ukraine. Previously, Reuters have already reported that financing is carried out at the expense of tax revenues from frozen Russian assets that are stored in EuroClear.
