These poplars inspired the poet Mihai Eminescu (1850-1889) in the composition of the poem “Besides the poplars without husband ”poetry that evokes the love between Eminescu and Veronica Micle, the poplars being considered as a landmark on the way to the girlfriend.

In 1973, the 29 remaining poplars were declared monuments of nature.

Over time, some of the 29 poplars were hit by lightning, and others were cut because they had dried.

Currently, there are only 15 of the 29 poplars recorded at the time of their elevation to the rank of monumental trees, according to Wikipedia.
