The Romanian Embassy in the United States has taken note of the ones reported in the article in the political daily and immediately asked the US authorities to confirm the accuracy of the information, said American ambassador Andrei Muraru for Hotnews, after the US publication reported that Trump is considering sending thousands of migrants, including 100 Romanians, in Guantanamo.

The Trump administration intends to intensify the expulsion of migrants without documents to Guantanamo Bay from this week, at least 9,000 people being taken into account for this transfer, documents quoted by Politico shows.

If the American publication mentions 100 Romanians, the embassy says it has a much smaller number of Romanians in the centers of the agency responsible for migration.

“From the information obtained by our embassy, at this time, in the ICE centers (US Immigration and Customs Enforcement) there are 47 Romanian citizens who have the final deportation formalities and are not considering their transport to the Guantanamo naval base,” says Muraru.

The ambassador also states that the institution he runs is in permanent connection with the American authorities to clarify the situation of Romanian citizens who are in the situation of being returned to Romania.

Trump's intentions

Politico reports that a wave of migrant transfers to Guantanamo prison could start on Wednesday. At least 9,000 people are targeted. About 800 Europeans – including 100 Romanians – are considered, according to plans that are not yet completed.

This would be an exponential growth compared to the approximately 500 migrants who were detained for short periods starting with February and an important step towards the plane announced in January by Donald Trump, who aimed to use this facility to retain up to 30,000 migrants.

Prisoners will remain temporary to Guantanamo, before being deported to their origin countries.

The official reason for the transfers is to release space for beds in the detention centers on the American territory.

But the use of prison that has long housed terrorism suspects, would also send another signal to discourage illegal immigration to the United States, writes Politico.
