During an official visit held on Monday, June 9, in Uzbekistan, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico made some at least controversial statements, which drew the attention of European and international public opinion. He suggested that authoritarian regimes, such as those in China, Vietnam or even Uzbekistan, could be more economically effective than Western liberal democracies, Agerpres notes.

Robert Fico said that the European Union should re -analyze how its democratic system is organized in order to remain competitive globally. He indicated that the multitude of political parties and the fragmentation of the ruling coalitions weaken the ability of the democratic states to make fast and firm decisions in the economic field.

“If you have a hundred political parties, you cannot compete,” he said. “If a government consists of four political entities, you cannot compete”, added the Slovak Prime Minister who returned to power in 2023 for the fourth time.

At the common press conference held in Uzbekistan, Robert Fico stressed that he does not urge the abandonment of democracy, but he believes that a reform of the system is necessary to increase your efficiency. He appreciated the ability of authoritarian regimes to act quickly in the face of economic challenges, without being constrained by long and often sterile political negotiations.

The prime minister's statements come in a tense political context in Slovakia. In recent months, Fico has been the target of major protests and was accused of opposition and civil society of authoritarian tendencies and a pronounced pro-Russian orientation in foreign policy.

He rejected the accusations and stated that the protests are an attempt by the Liberals to undermine the results of the democratic elections through street pressure.
