The relevant act has already entered into force. The remaining 70 percent costs, i.e. approx. PLN 135 billion, is to be financed by debt.
“Perhaps a good solution would be to establish a special consortium” – assessed the president of Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego Mirosław Czekaj. As he emphasized, BGK is a development bank established primarily for financing strategic projects, key for the development and security of the country.
“It is therefore natural that BGK is ready to get involved in financing the construction of large infrastructure projects, including a nuclear power plant in Poland” – admitted Mirosław Czekaj.
At the same time, he pointed out that more and more banks and financial institutions are interested in financing nuclear energy, which was not yet so obvious several months ago.
“A large part of the institutions directly in their credit policies had the exclusion of this type of investment, now it is changing,” he noted. He added that cooperation with investors in this area is provided for in BGK's strategy and credit policy.
“Our potential commitment, however, will depend in particular on the final business and financial model for such a large project” – the president pointed out. He also emphasized that nuclear energy will be a strategic element of the national energy system.
Financial instruments for this type of projects are complicated, due to the potential amount of debt involvement, their weight never rests with one financial institution. There are voices in the banking environment that Polish banks may not be able to finance huge transformation projects due to the amount of capital and concentration limits.
The first Polish nuclear power plant is to be built in AP1000 Westinghouse technology in the Lubiatowo-Kopalino location in Pomerania. According to the schedule, pouring so -called The first concrete for the first reactor is to take place in 2028. The beginning of commercial operation of the first block is planned for 2036.
