French President Emmanuel Macron denounced on Sunday in Nice, on the eve of the United Nations Conference on the Ocean (UNOC3), the “huge mistake” of those who, including in France, want to challenge “the priority granted to the climate”, AFP reports.

“The reduction (funds for science), this is no longer priority. (…) We will deal with it or manage a crisis after the crisis … a huge mistake,” said the French president.

The leaders of the world meet in Nice from Sunday to discuss the global “urgency” that threatens the oceans. On this occasion, AFP has published an article dedicated to the most important aspects of this conference organized by the UN.

The NGOs and the small island states hope that this summit, which will start on the Azure Coast on Monday, will go beyond mere speeches on a series of high topics.

The creation of new protected marine areas (AMP) should be announced in Nice by several governments, which could lead to the 10% protective threshold (against 8.63% currently), according to the French Minister for Ecological Transition, Agnes Pannier-Runacher.

The international community set a protection objective of 30% by 2030 (the objective “30 × 30”). But, at the current pace, this objective will not be achieved before 2107, according to the Greenpeace Ecological Organization.
