Alert state in Mureș, after the flood of Saline Praid increased the salinity of the Târnava Mică river

The authorities in Mureș warned the locals on Monday, June 2, that the salinity of the Târnava Mică river increased, due to the flooding of Saline Praid.

“Following the massive water infiltration from the Corund stream, Salina Praid was completely floodedand its activity was permanently closed on May 29, 2025. The incident affected the hydrogeological balance in the area, and as a side effect, an increase in salinity in the water of Târnava Mică, source that serves about 39,000 people was found.”, Transfers Mureș Prefecture in a statement.
Therefore, alert state has been declared in several localities in Mures, but the water will not be stopped, as it can be used only for washing, hygiene and cleaning.
“Measures taken: It was proposed to declare the alert state, with the consent of the Minister of Internal Affairs, for a period of 30 days, starting June 2, 2025, at 23:00, in the following UATs:
- Târnăveni Municipality: Târnăveni, Cuștelnic, Bobohalma, Botorca
- Pucciu Commune: Pucciu, Deleni
- ADMUȘ commune: Adduș, Dâmbău, Cornești, Crăiești
- Gănești commune: Gănești, Seuca, Răucișoara
- Fântânele commune: Fântânele, Viforoasa, Călimănești
The current situation:
- The water will not be stopped.
- The water is not drinkable, but it can be used for washing, hygiene and cleaning.
- Direct consumption is not recommended up to new analysis”, Transmits the cited institution.
However, water is not drinkable and cannot be used for cooking, and citizens are advised to follow the RO-ALERT messages and the official information of the authorities.
Among the measures taken are: increasing the monitoring frequency for chlorides and sodiums in the raw water and network water by the company Aquaserv SA Târgu Mureş and the Mureş Water Basin Administration, monitoring of public springs and fountains from the localities crossed by the Târnava Mic. Mureş.
For warning the population from the affected areas, a message was transmitted through the RO-Alert system.
At the same time, the company Aquaserv SA Târgu Mureş will apply the measures included in the water safety plan for the affected areas, regarding the improper water quality in the distribution network.
Also, the County Committee for Emergency Situations of Mures County has requested support to the National Committee for Emergency Situations to ensure drinking water from the affected localities, until the identification of solutions on the local level.
The authorities monitor the situation continuously, in collaboration with the specialists from the Romanian Waters, the Directorate of Public Health, the company Aquaserv, the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations “Horea” of Mures county and other authorized institutions.
