The leader of the Democratic Alliance (AD, Center-Drepta), Luis Montenegro, whose formation was placed in the first place in the May 18 elections in Portugal, was appointed again prime minister and invited to form his second minority government, the Portuguese presidency announced on Thursday evening, ARSERS and AFP transmitted.

After consultations with the political parties and “once the possibility of parliamentary support for the new Executive, the president (Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa) was appointed to Mr. Luis Montenegro,” the presidency on the institution's website today (Once).

Ad has obtained 91 mandates out of a total of 230 -with 11 more than in the previous legislature, but still very far from having a majority -, following an election marked by the transformation of the Chega party (extreme right) into the main opposition force, instead of the Socialist Party (PS).

Montenegro, who first reached power in March 2024, refused any agreement with Chega, anti -system and anti -immigration party, who gathered 60 votes, with two over socialists, who registered the weakest result of the last four decades.

According to the Presidency statement, Montenegro will announce the composition of the new government after the Parliament will meet in its first session. A confirmation vote is not required, but any party may present a rejection motion.

The elections were summoned after Montenegro did not get a vote of confidence in March, when the opposition challenged the integrity due to contracts of the consulting company of his family.
