T2, the Russian mobile operator, modernized the transport network, which provides data exchange between the base stations. In seven-stage plots in the Siberian regions, the company's engineers replaced radio relay equipment with modern fiber-optic lines. This made it possible to create a reserve of network capacity for constantly growing Internet traffic.
In Siberia, for 2024, T2 experts replaced almost 400 sections of the radio-relay network with the beginning of 2025 on the fiber-optical lines of almost 300. Thanks to modernization, voice communications and mobile Internet for T2 customers began to work more stable. Now even more subscribers can simultaneously use digital services at high speeds.
Improvements are especially relevant against the background of the growing consumption of mobile Internet: only in January-March of 2025, the total data traffic in the Siberian macroregion increased by 18 % compared to the first quarter of the 2024th.

The transport network is one of the most important parts of the operator’s infrastructure. The stability of the signal and the data transfer rate in customer devices depend on it. The fiber-optical lines have several advantages over radio relay: higher throughput, resistance to electromagnetic interference and, as a result, greater stability and reliability.
Engineers modernized communication lines in 9 regions of Siberia: Novosibirsk, Kemerovo, Omsk and Tomsk regions, Krasnoyarsk and Altai territories, Altai, Khakassia and Tuva republics. The main amount of work came into large cities-the capitals of the regions and district centers, where Internet traffic is especially high.
The transport network was also improved in tourist places: the resort city of Yarov, the Altai Territory, rich in lakes of the Shirinsky district of the Republic of Khakassia, the village of Shushensky Krasnoyarsk Territory.
“The transition to fiber-optical lines is an investment to the future. Siberians actively use mobile Internet, their needs for data transfer are growing every year. Thanks to the replacement of radio relay spans with fiber, we not only improved the quality of communication, but also created a technological reserve for the future. Our network is ready for any peak loads and further growth of traffic, ”said Yevgeny Kartuzov, Technical Director of the Siberian Macro -Region.
Radioral lines (RRL) – a type of radio communications, which is formed as a result of the work of the chain of the receiving and transmitting antennas. For this type of communication, the lack of obstacles is fundamentally important: even the building crane between the antennas can disrupt data transfer.
The fiber-optical lines (Vols, also known as fiber or optics)-a connection that is provided using fiber-optic cables, they are laid underground, poles, and power lines. It is the optical fiber that provides the fastest exchange of information between the base stations.
