To 20 years in prison, the court in France sentenced a former doctor Joel Le Scouarnec, accused of rape and sexual abuse of patients. This is a maximum possible punishment. Among almost 300 victims of Le Scouarneca, the majority were minors; The average age is 11 years.

The verdict was expected – such a penalty of punishment was previously demanded by the prosecutor. The former doctor did not ask the court for indulgence. In the last word, he only said that he was asking for the right to “become better”. His lawyer argued that the accused “did not try to save himself” and that he confessed the truth. Le Scouarnec will not appeal against the sentence.
The court agreed that after serving two -thirds of the sentence, the convicted person could ask for early release. Currently, Le Scouarnec under a sentence of 15 years in prison, also for sexual crimes against children. Wednesday's judgment may not be the last, because two investigations were initiated, including in order to determine any other, unknown to his victims. The second investigation aims to determine possible criminal liability on the part of persons or institutions that could prevent crimes.
The verdict does not provide for the placement of Le Scouarnec after serving a sentence in a special center, as demanded by the prosecutor. It is a place where sex offenders are directed, which is a significant probability that they will commit a crime again. Representative of the expert organization Civise Solene Podevin Favre criticized this court decision. In her opinion, “no one really believes in the desire to improve” Le Scouarneca.
One of the victims of Le Scouarneca, Amelie Leveque, also regretted that he could “pass the street one day and see people again.”
During the Le Scouarnec trial, he confessed to most of the deeds. He was accused of: 111 rapes and 188 sexual assaults, made over the past 25 years – from 1989 to 2014. There were 158 boys and 141 girls among the victims of the doctor. Francesca Satta's civil lawyer's lawyer said on Wednesday that taking into account the number of victims, “20 years in prison is not enough”.
The proceedings before the court in Brittany were assessed as the largest process in France regarding pedophile crimes. Questions were raised during the process of neglecting medical institutions, which allowed Le Scouarnec to work for so long. Although in the past he was convicted of having child pornography, he was allowed to continue their profession and work in hospitals – where he still used children.
For this reason, organizations fighting for the protection of children, such as Civise (committee for the problem of incest and sexual violence against children) joined the process as civil parties).
The 74-year-old Le Scouarnec was detained in 2017, when his victim fell a six-year-old girl living in the neighborhood. During the search, the police found his diaries with descriptions of deeds he committed on small patients. Some of them were not aware of this, for example, they were under anesthesia. Memoirs show that Le Scouarnec felt unpunished and proud that he was not caught. In addition to these notes, over 300,000 were discovered in his house. photos and several hundred video files containing pedophile and zoophilic content.
In 2023, experts decided that the former doctor was not compassionate for his victims, and during the current trial psychologists and psychiatrists talked about the exceptional accumulation of perversion and a tendency to re -commit a crime.
