The economic and political situation of Romania will be the main topic addressed by President Nicușor Dan at the consultations convened on Wednesday at the Cotroceni Palace with the parliamentary parties, but also with a delegation of the 26 non -affiliated parliamentarians, part of them coming from PO.
Finding the solutions to solve the problem of the budget deficit is the main priority of the discussions that the new president convened. Nicușor Dan repeatedly said after winning the elections that he wants an agreement on the government program between the parties that will form the future government before the discussion on the names of those who will be part of the Executive.
Nicușor Dan estimated that the future government will be invested within a “3-4 weeks”. He will have to appoint a new prime minister, given that Marcel Ciolacu announced, on May 5, the resignation of the prime minister and the breaking of the PSD-PNL-UDMR coalition, after Crin Antonescu missed the entry 2 of the presidential elections. The interim government is now led by Cătălin Predoiu. The law provides for a term of 45 days until the appointment of a full government.
“I think it is good for all things to be established beforehand so as not to have tensions in the Government. I do not want to hurry with the formation of the government. Let's take a three to four weeks,” said Nicușor Dan, on May 22, at Black Sea and Balkans Security Forum 2025.

In the investment speech held on Monday in Parliament, immediately after taking the oath, Nicușor Dan said that, “in the short term, Romania has a problem, the problem of deficit”.

If the last three parties have stated openly that they want to be in the future Executive, the interim leader of the PSD, Sorin Grindeanu, said that the party has not made a decision and that he will come to the discussions with the president with an open mandate. He claimed that a majority opinion was for the party to enter the opposition.
However, Grindeanu was contradicted by several voices from the PSD, including Constantin Toma, who said that there is a majority in favor of staying in government. The mayor of Buzau has accused the current leadership of “saying an inadequate” when announces that it is not a clear current in favor of a decision.
Asked how he will convince the Social Democrats to enter the governance, Nicușor Dan suggested that politicians have to assume problems: “I think we, politicians, we are here to serve society. That is what we must be. At this moment, the society has a fiscal difficulty. which the society has.

PNL, USR and UDMR want to government
All pro-European parties must be in the executive, and those of “good faith” must have “flexibility” and “openness” for a common government program, said PNL Secretary General, Adrian Veștea, after having a discussion with Ilie Bolojan, who resumed his position as interim president.
Asked if PNL will accept a prime minister from the PSD, Veștea replied: “I think what we should talk in the next period is to find a formula, to create a government that has a large majority. I do not think we should close the door to any discussion.”
He mentioned Ilie Bolojan as the right version of the prime minister of the future government. “He is the person who is expected by the Romanians, is a credible person, a person who has shown in public life that he is able to make these reforms.”
The day before the consultations at the Cotroceni Palace convened by President Nicușor Dan, the USR and PNL interim leaders had a discussion in Ilie Bolojan's Senate Office on Tuesday.
Asked if the USR enters a government in which the PSD gives the prime minister, Dominic Fritz stressed that the party wants the Liberal leader to be the one who takes over the head of the government.
“We want Ilie Bolojan to be the prime minister of Romania. It is also the proposal and desire of the president and I am confident that we will be able to reach these negotiations in such results,” said Fritz.
Both USR and UDMR; They stressed that tomorrow the discussions are based on economic reforms and not on the composition of the government.
“We have a broad term, open to discuss what is to be done in the near future and of course, if necessary, the government formula, the government structure, especially the government program. Tomorrow (no. Wednesday) the discussion is about the budget, on the economic situation. So tomorrow we will not talk about what follows.
