The higher regional court in Vienna at Pay on Monday, May 26, on former Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, canceling the sentence previously pronounced by a lower court for false testimony. The decision is final, according to the National Press Agency Apa, quoted by Agerpres.
The former Chancellor was accused, along with two people, of lying under oath before a parliamentary commission of inquiry, risking a sentence of up to three years in prison. At the center of the accusations he found his alleged influence in the process of appointing the management of the Oebag State Company, more precisely in support of Thomas Schmid for a key function.
The facts would have taken place in 2020, and Kurz denied under the oath any direct involvement in the appointment of Schmid. Despite the accusations, the higher court has established that there is not enough evidence to confirm a false testimony.
Sebastian Kurz, now 40 years old, led the Austrian government in two mandates, between 2017-2019 and 2020-2021. In October 2021, he resigned as a result of a separate investigation, related to suspicions of corruption.
At 31, he had become the youngest chosen leader in the world, and is also the first former criminal trial in the last three decades in Austria.
