Serious oil spill from a pipeline near the border with Poland
The local newspaper “Maerkische Oderzeitung”, which was the first to report the leak, reported that oil was gushing from the pipeline to a height of several meters and that the leak would probably not be stopped until morning.
It is not yet known what caused the pipeline failure. Brandenburg's Environment Minister Hanka Mittelstaedt announced that she would go to the site on Thursday to assess the extent of the damage.
The pipeline runs from the port of Rostock on the Baltic Sea to the PCK refinery, which is the main supplier of fuel to Brandenburg and Berlin. The town of Schwedt, where the refinery is located, is located on the Oder River, right next to the border with Poland.
