Record compensation for medical expenses: Impressive amount paid last year to a person with travel insurance

The highest compensation paid last year on the basis of a travel insurance by an UNSAR member insurer (insurance union) was about 60,000 euros, higher than 33% compared to the 2023 record, a trend reflecting the severity of medical situations that can intervene even on holidays, announced on Friday the organization that represents over 90%.

The centralized data at the UNSAR level shows that the first 10 largest damages paid in 2024 based on travel insurance amounted to 400,000 euros.

This value corresponds to medical expenses necessary for tourists insured during travel.

“A travel insurance can cover both medical expenses and other unforeseen costs – such as luggage loss or cancellation. The correct information is essential to make the right choices,” said Alina Bărbulescu, specialist goods and properties within UNSAR.

The statistical data are also confirmed by a recent sociological study by IRES, at the request of UNSAR, according to which 35% of Romanians say that, if they go on vacation this year, they will purchase a travel insurance for the risk/accident abroad, increasing by 4 percentage points.

At the same time, 13% declare that they will purchase a policy for the risk of illness/accident on the Romanian territory, up 5 percentage points compared to last year.

How many travel insurances did the Romanians last year

The Romanians made 286,715 travel insurance last year (class A18: assistance for people in difficulty during travel), up 23% (an additional 54,517 contracts) compared to 2023, according to the centralized data by the Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF).

The revenues collected by insurers (including those who are not in the supervision of ASF, but of the authorities in other states) increased by 4% to 196 million lei.
