The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, spoke on the phone with Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang, on Tuesday, and warned against climbing in the commercial impasse that US customs duties have triggered, Brussels announced, according to AFP.

Speaking with Prime Minister Li Qiang after Beijing promised that he would “fight to the end” against the new tariff threats that Donald Trump has launched, Ursula von Der Leyen emphasized the “vital importance of stability” for the world economy.

“The president has requested a negotiated resolution of the current situation, emphasizing the need to avoid further escalation,” says the European Commission.

The US President disturbed the world economy with high rates that raised the spectrum of an international recession, excluding any break in its aggressive commercial policy, despite the problems in the markets.

Beijing, a major economic rival for Washington, but also a key commercial partner, has responded with 34% taxes for American goods. The measure will enter into force on Thursday and emphasize the confrontation between the main savings of the world.

The prime minister of China told Ursula von der Leyen that the second economy of the world has the “tools” needed to manage the situation, according to the information transmitted by the Xinhua news agency.

“China's macroeconomic policy is fully taking into account the different uncertainties and has a sufficient reserve of policy tools,” said Li Qiang.

“China can fully protect itself against negative external effects and is fully confident in maintaining a sustained and healthy economic development,” the Chinese official added.

Trump threatened China with new rates

China's rapid response to the measures of the United States have made Donald Trump threaten to introduce additional taxes if Beijing refuses to give back. If the new measures are materialized, the total taxes on Chinese goods would reach 104%.

“In response to a large -scale disturbance caused by US tariffs, Von Der Leyen has stressed the responsibility of Europe and China, as two of the world's largest markets, to support a strongly reformed, free, equitable and based on equitable competition,” said the European Commission.

Ursula von der Leyen had announced on Monday that the EU had offered the United States a bilateral exemption from cars and other industrial goods, but Trump believed that the proposal was insufficient.

In the conversation he had on Tuesday with Li Qiang, the President of the European Commission also addressed the EU fears regarding the possibility of US tariffs to flood the community block with Chinese goods.

“Von Der Leyen has emphasized China's critical role in approaching possible disorders of trade caused by rates, especially in sectors already affected by global overcapacity,” Brussels statement said.

“The leaders discussed the creation of a mechanism for the pursuit of the possible disorders of the trade and to ensure that any evolution is approached properly,” the same statement states.
