The intervention was ordered by the Operational Command of NATO's meeting forces, responsible for the air space above Europe, according to the Polish press.
A Russian Su-24 aircraft performed dangerous maneuvers on Thursday night and was intercepted by Polish Air Force, the National Defense Minister, Wladysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, said Reuters.
He added that the aircraft interception order was issued by the common operational command for NATO allied forces, and Polish aircraft located the aircraft, intercepted and discouraged it.
A Polish mission has been operating in Lithuania for several weeks as part of the patrol of air space above the Baltic Sea, reports Telewizja Polska (TVP). This includes approximately 150 soldiers and F-14 aircraft.
Polish Deputy Prime Minister said that “these maneuvers show what the intentions are, that it is not an accidental action.”
This is another similar incident of recent weeks, according to TVP.
“These two events show how important the Baltic Sea area is, how important is everything that happens in the Baltic Sea, how dangerous it is (…). Kosiniak-Kamysz.
